Teriyaki Creative
The hardest thing to brand is yourself. Just my personal opinion. As an in-house designer for most of my life, I am so used to putting on other brands like clothes, so I didn’t really know where to start with my own brand. The icon in my logo is a Tsubaki flower (camellia), and I wanted one of the main brand colors to be red, like the flower itself, and to harken back to the traditional Japanese hanko, a personal seal used for official documents. Growing up in the US, I didn’t get to experience some of the basic aspects of Japanese culture, and a rebrand seemed like the perfect way to incorporate them.
My personal brand is always evolving, and I try to include a sense of irreverent whimsy in what I do. The name Teriyaki comes from a high school experience when the office called me the wrong name over the loudspeaker. I decided to own the salty-sweet moniker rather than be embarrassed or angry about it. My general style is either an all-black outfit or something bright, colorful, and full of texture and pattern. The bright chartreuse is loud but also a reminder to let your weird out sometimes.
